Overview

The history of religions in modern South India is still somewhat neglected within the field of South Asian research. South India is, however, one of the most interesting regions of India, and not only because of its remarkable economic growth within India's current boom. In terms of its cultural and religious aspects, the South Indian context sets its own course within India, which requires increased academic research. Of particular interest are the cultural and religious processes of transformation within South Indian society, since the 18th century, under the influence of colonialism and mission. Within this major field of study, the Department of Religious and Mission Studies is making a contribution to the shaping of the South Asian profile at the Universtiy of Heidelberg.
